Snakearms

In a world that slowly moves away from tactility, the handshake was one of the only remains as direct and real physical contact with the other. Since this handshake now has been replaced by an elbow, foot touch or even just a simple nod, Alexander Vantournhout and Emmi Väisänen created a duet, to remind us of the more tactile times from before.

Uitgaande van dit - nogal formele - eerste lichaamscontact, transformeren Alexander en Emmi een simpele handdruk tot een ingewikkeld hand-, arm- en ledematen-duet. Hun lichamen kluwen tot een mengelmoes van armen en benen, en gewrichten draaien zo ver dat het voor het oog van buitenaf onduidelijk is waar de ene arm begint en de andere ophoudt. Het is niet langer duidelijk waar de ene arm begint en de andere ophoudt. Degene die leidt is moeilijk te onderscheiden van degene die volgt. Dit resulteert in een delicaat evenwicht waarin ledematen en lichamen zich vermengen tot een onontwarbare en intieme knoop.

"Snakearms als filmregistratie voegt zijn eigen verhaal toe aan de geënsceneerde versie, door een intelligent gebruik van zowel geluid als montage, focus en camerastandpunt. Eerst houdt de camera zich vast aan de handen, maar dan trekt hij zich steeds verder terug in het publiek. Je ziet dan het hele podium, met een antiek geschilderd perspectivisch decor van een bos. Wat de camera vooral laat zien is dat dit decor en het podiumkader samen de illusie van een andere wereld creëren, een ongerept boslandschap." - jury het TheaterFestival 2021
